History & Mission

Our History

Campco Federal Credit Union, also known as CFCU, was founded in 1971 by just 10 members under the name Campco School Employees Federal Credit Union. In the beginning, membership was limited to employees of the Campbell County School District, their immediate families, and credit union staff. Operations were simple and personal, conducted out of a member’s home with basic share accounts and small loans.

Growth came steadily. In 1986, Campco FCU merged with Consolidated Credit Union, expanding its reach and resources. By the late 1980s, the credit union had grown enough to move into its first leased office, which it shared with a local accounting firm.

By its 20th anniversary, Campco FCU reached $5 million in assets and had evolved into Campco Federal Credit Union. Membership had expanded to include all Campbell County government and City employees. Soon after, land was purchased for a permanent home, and in 1993, CFCU officially opened its main branch at 902 E. 3rd Street in Gillette.

In 1996, with nearly $10 million in assets, CFCU transitioned to a community charter. This allowed the credit union to serve anyone who lives, works, or worships in Campbell County. Continued growth in the 1990s led to the opening of the Wright branch, which began in leased office space and improved access for members across the county.

Between 2002 and 2008, CFCU doubled its assets from $25 million to $50 million. During this time, additional land was purchased in Wright to build a permanent branch location, further strengthening the credit union’s presence in the community.

By 2011, CFCU celebrated its 40th anniversary with $62 million in assets. Membership eligibility expanded again to include six counties across northeast Wyoming, including Campbell, Johnson, Weston, Crook, Converse, and Sheridan.

In 2014, CFCU moved into its current headquarters at 1110 E Boxelder Road in Gillette. At that time, the credit union had grown to $82 million in assets and served more than 11,000 members.

Expansion continued in 2019, when CFCU extended its field of membership to serve additional communities across Wyoming and South Dakota. This included the Wyoming counties of Big Horn, Goshen, Hot Springs, Natrona, Niobrara, Park, Platte, Teton, and Washakie, as well as Lawrence, Meade, and Pennington counties in South Dakota. That same year, assets reached $133 million and membership grew to 14,000.

By 2024, CFCU surpassed $200 million in assets and proudly served around 20,000 members. Growth remained strong, with a permanent branch opening in Sheridan in 2025 at 2511 Coffeen Avenue. In 2026, with assets surpassing $225 million, the field of membership expanded once more to include Carbon, Stillwater, and Yellowstone counties in Montana. Looking ahead, CFCU is planning for continued growth in Montana, including future plans for a branch in Billings to better serve members in the region.

From its humble beginnings in a member’s home to a regional financial partner, CFCU continues to focus on people, community, and service at every step of its journey.
